Works on display at ContengLAH '16

The wonderful people at Doodle Malaysia's annual exhibition, ContengLAH '16, will be held on 2-3 April 2016 at Makespace, Quill City Mall, Kuala Lumpur; and I'll be exhibiting two of my pieces there! I'll be at the exhibition on the morning of Sunday April 3, so do drop by to say hello!

The first work is something I'm really excited about - my most recently completed (it's been a long process - you'll hear about it in the blurb below!) work, The Kingdom of Masserson (click on the image for a larger view).

THE KINGDOM OF MASSERSON (2016)

The Kingdom of Masserson is an imaginary land inspired by the playtime favourites of the artist’s young daughter. Initially drawn for the child’s entertainment (certain features are requests by the kiddo – the Cat’s Playground, the storm clouds, the solar system; the name ‘Masserson’ itself is a creation of the child), the piece eventually became a little memento of one of the most inquisitive phases of the child’s growth, overlaid with hints of a parent’s love (the provision of a shelter from the storm) and, lest we forget, a little reminder to spend more quality time with one’s kids, who invariably grow up all too quickly – ‘There’s plenty of time’ (to play, that is!).

The second piece is a print of Believe, a.k.a. 'the winged shoe, one of my favourites which original currently hangs in my office (click on the image for a larger view).

BELIEVE (2015)

Shoes rule our lives more than we think – there are shoes that fit and shoes that don’t, shoes that we’re expected to fill.. all of which could very well sprout wings if one believed hard enough.

At the inception of this piece, this was a simple runner’s shoe, carrying with it the hopes and dreams of a budding athlete. By the time the finished drawing was displayed, it had taken on alternative personas of the people who had viewed it – a dancing shoe to one who wished to be freed from shackles; a winged messenger’s sandal to the traveller or mythology buff; and to the sentimental dreamer, Cinderella’s slipper.

The wing itself may eventually spread far and wide - but do note that it remains attached to that (now little) shoe - lest we forget to stay grounded ;-)

What’s your shoe?
